Alfred Korzybski – The Map is not the Territory. This is a major premise of NLP. It is true only to a point.

“A thing is only as real as the amount of attention you place on it”. Most attention is self-indulgently placed on trying to figure it out. Intellectual masturbation.
In a polarity, attention is placed either on one side, the other side, or divided between them. A person either places their attention on themselves (1st position), the other person (2nd position), or as observer (3rd position). The amount of reality created is dependant on the balance of attention. Only a thing with total attention actually exists.

When two people are in relationship they usually struggle for a larger share of the attention – they struggle using the learned patterns for stealing attention – called their Control Dramas.

The struggle between two people for attention is the sole reason for friction. The sharing of attention is the sole reason for polish or gloss. Any thing given sufficient attention will reappear as solid. A thing given only cursory attention will appear as background or illusion. To the degree you give your relationship attention is the degree that person will appear solid or background. Making love to a background is not satisfying for you nor the other person. Placing attention on anything so that it becomes real creates a connection that also appears as real. To the degree that a level of attention is kept on self is the degree of separation that remains between you and the other. When total attention is placed on something and retained attention diminishes to nothing, the subject of the attention assumes the feeling of “I”.

Love is a description of the level of attention one is willing to put onto something else. To totally love something is the same as being it. Pure attention is free from all judgements, descriptions, limitations and definitions. To place any attention on anything with a definition on it causes the attention to be polluted with mental images and ideas. Love is a form of pure unpolluted attention. Enlightenment is the ability to willingly apply pure attention onto anything. Pure attention applied to an activity is called Omnipotence. Pure attention applied to understanding something is called Omniscience.
Pure attention applied to a location is called Omnipresence (the enlightened being manifesting through pure attention appears to be with you at all locations).

Control of attention is the only necessity for enlightenment. Attention is lost through tricks of the mind providing entertainment value of what is important. All single questions have the ability to direct attention onto a single source. All answers that lead to more questions or onto a train of thoughts and ideas eventually lead to the background illusion.
